The \u201eVEREIN STELVIO-UMBRAIL 14\/18\u201c endeavours to secure and document the traces of the First World War that can still be found today in the region of the highest Alpine passes, and to make them accessible to a broad public.\n

At the intersection of the trilingual region of Val M\u00fcstair (Switzerland) \u2013 Vinschgau (until 1918 Austria-Hungary) \u2013 Valtellina (Italy), the impressive relics of this relentless military confrontation, which did not even stop at the high mountains, can be found.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Swiss Confederation was fortunate not to be (also) directly affected by this worldwide conflict in military terms. Thousands of Swiss soldiers carried out their national defense service on this tri-border during the years 1914 \u2013 1918 and became eyewitnesses of a conflict at the highest secondary war theater in world history. The eyewitnesses have passed away. Military historical hiking trails<\/h4>\n

Near the Stelvio Pass (2757) \u2013 until 1918 the common border point of Italy, the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary and Switzerland was located on the trilingual peak.<\/p>\n

Three languages \u2013 three regions \u2013 three cultures.<\/p>\n

Our themed hiking trails meet here today and shed light on the thinking and views of the countries affected at that time.<\/p>\n

Four theme trails invite you to search for traces \u2013 three or four hiking days in beautiful nature and historically charged surroundings.<\/p>\n

Welcome to the \u201eMUSEUM 14\/18<\/h4>\n

The \u201eMUSEUM 14\/18\u201c \u2013 in the vaulted cellar of the Chasa Plaz in Sta. Maria \u2013 was opened in 2007. Thanks to the generous generosity of the community, the \u201eVEREIN STELVIO-UMBRAIL 14\/18\u201c was able to create an attractive information center in the valley about the history of the war on the Stelvio Pass and especially about the importance of the Swiss border occupation.<\/p>\n
